Grandma’s Homemade Bread Rolls

We were served these sweet bread rolls when we visited our Grandma. Grandma’s bread rolls straight from the oven and with cheese, tastes simply amazing!


1kg/2¼lb wheat flour
140g/5oz caster sugar
140g/5oz margarine
1/2tsp cardamom
750ml/1pt 7fl oz milk
50g-60g/2oz yeast
1 egg

Preparation method

Melt the margarine, add the milk and heat until the mix reaches 37C/99F.

Mix the dry ingredients.

Stir the yeast into the margarine and milk mixture.

Then mix the dry and wet together. Sprinkle with flour and set to rise for about 45 minutes.

Roll out ‘sausages’ and set them to rise a bit more.

Use a scissor and make ‘cuts’ in the bread rolls, and brush with egg.

Let the bread rolls bake at 225C/425F/Gas 7 for around 15 minutes – until golden.
